How old are you and please can you share your health and fitness journey to date?

I'm 27 years old and my journey officially began five years ago in January of 2011. I started and quit countless other workout routines and eating plans before finally deciding that I needed to make a real change. I haven't had the fastest transformation, losing 90 pounds over the course of five years, but I have learned how to make this a lifestyle. Even in the long stretches where I wasn't losing weight, I never reverted to my old lifestyle. The time this journey takes is irrelevant as long as you keep moving forward.

What types of foods did you used to eat as a kid and young adult? What's changed since then?

As a kid, I mostly remember being drawn to anything with sugar; ice cream, candy, Little Debbie snacks (hello, Star Crunch), popsicles, the works. Our family dinners weren't necessarily bad for us, but I don't think I really ever understood the concept of healthy eating or that food shouldn't be a reward. As a young adult and into college, my life was all about convenience. My go-to foods were ramen noodles, instant rice packets, macaroni and cheese and endless chicken and rice burritos. The ice cream in the dining hall at college was particularly delicious! And of course, lots and lots of fast food and soda.

My daily food intake now looks much different. I usually make steel cut oatmeal mixed with greek yogurt and fruit for breakfast. The remainder of my meals consist of lean protein sources, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lots of whole grains. My current favorite snack is sprouted grain bread topped with natural peanut butter and blueberries. I still treat myself with some of my favorites, but it's on occasion rather than daily.

Do you play any sports or what sports do you like watching?

I love watching football - Go Broncos!

What are your interests, passion and what makes you smile?

I love music and going to concerts, hiking, traveling, and I particularly enjoy helping others who are on their own fitness journey.

What was the catalyst that sparked your lifestyle change?

I had been overweight my entire life and I grew think that's who I was meant to be. After college, my weight gain picked up rapidly, although it was never obvious to me. I knew I was buying larger sizes and that I didn't feel great, but it wasn't until I saw a photo of myself after a night out with friends that I really understood what I had been doing to myself. I was morbidly obese at 263 pounds and something needed to change.

What are some of your dreams/goals you hope to achieve over the next 12 months?

I'm getting married in October 2016 so I'm going to work to be in the best shape I can for that! I don't have a particular goal weight or body in mind, I just want to be the happiest and healthiest version of myself. My other goals include hiking at least one (but hopefully more) new 14,000 ft. mountain and traveling to another country for the first time.

What tips would you like to share with my readers about your transformation?

With perseverance, anyone can do this. The hard part is sticking with a routine long enough to actually see a change, but once you get past that hurdle, the results are addicting. It's not always easy but it's totally worth it.
